NORWAY: BERGEN – FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD – PART 3

The Fish Market in Bergen has existed since the 1200s and has since then been one of the most important places for trade between fishermen, farmers and the local people of the city. In addition to the merchants on land there were also historically sales from boats along the quay. Fishermen who lived outside the city used to row in to the Fish Market to sell their catch of the day before rowing back home the same day.  In the market  you can buy not only fresh fish and seafood including many varieties of  caviar, but also local farm food like fruit, berries and vegetables, cheeses, chocolates and more:
A “fish tasting”  was arranged for us with  white  wine  or cider accompaniment:
The sampling included  salmon (one smoked and another marinaded with dill and spices) herring, mackerel and whale.  In a complete turnaround to 1994 I ate them all and loved them!
